Well, it's not clear that the world actually needs the profession. So, does that mean that the world does not need these ignoramuses?

They certainly have fund sniping and carping, though.

Personally, I'm a fan of the institutional economists. I'm pretty happy to learn a few more names in addition to John Kenneth Galbraith and Gunnar Myrdal (and Thorstein Veblen).

Robert you really opened a lid on a sewer there.

Luckily I've not been exposed to the cultural milieu of graduate economics studies in the USA. But even from a distance it's clear to me that something is rotten. I get the impression that, in general, the practice of science is viewed as a game of competition and material advancement, rather than a vocation and discipline that is its own reward.

What a strange series of links...

Although, I had to agree with this:

"Austrians are to economics what creationists are to religion"

I think the original commentor was right, as economics is a religion not a science...

So the mainstream of both seem reasonable on first glance, while the creationists and Austrians are obviously mental...

The stupid and vile mainstream economists you should be linking to are working at the federal reserve.

The Nobel Prize for economics should have gone to Ben Bernanke, who in the spirit of Keynes, brought the economy back from the brink. This is mainstream thought, and it is vile.
